Neighborhood
To me, Aspen/Snowmass is an unparalleled destination where limitless outdoor recreation meets magnificent luxury to create an experience unlike any other. One minute you can enjoy world-class skiing, hiking or mountain biking. The next, you can slide, step or pedal to five star restaurants, bustling nightlife, craft breweries, designer shopping, art galleries, live music, legal cannabis and so much more. For outdoor activity in the summer, my favorite local hikes are Crater Lake/Maroon Bells (Easy), Cathedral Lake (Medium), Buckskin Pass (Hard) and the Four Pass Loop/Maroon-Snowmass Wilderness Loop (Grand-Daddy 27 Miler). You can find all these trails on Alltrails.com or the AllTrails App. My favorite mountain bike trails in Snowmass are Deadline, Rim Trail and Valhalla. In Aspen, my favorites are Sunnyside and Hummingbird. In Carbondale/Basalt my favorite is Father of Ginormous. In the winter, you can come for four days and ski a different resort every day. Here’s the lowdown on the ski resorts: Snowmass — biggest resort with the most terrain. Lots of beginner/intermediate slopes but also plenty of advanced/expert terrain. Buttermilk — great for families with lots of beginner terrain. Also great for park-rats. This is where they hold the X-Games every year. Aspen Mountain/“Ajax” — great for advanced/expert skiers with lots of steep terrain. Not great for beginner/intermediate skiers. Great for the “Aspen” experience where you can ski right into town and experience the Après scene. Aspen Highlands — world class terrain with the famous “Highland Bowl” and “Deep Temerity” chair which offer an incredible slackcountry experience for advanced/expert skiers. My favorite stores/restaurants/places in Aspen are Local Coffee House for breakfast, Big Wrap for an inexpensive lunch, Pyramid Bistro for a healthy dinner, Belly Up for intimate live music, Aspen Billiards for a game of pool or shuffle-board and finally Peter Lik’s incredible photo gallery. In Snowmass, I like Fuel Cafe for light fare and Il Poggio for fantastic upscale Italian food. If you’re downvalley in Basalt and want some incredible food, I recommend checking out Tempranillo.
